COVID-19 Update in Canada – December 2021

Travelling isn’t as straight-forward as it used to be. Following the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and now the emergence of a new variant, countries like Canada have tightened their entry requirements in order to maintain safety.

However, don’t lose hope. Despite the many regulations that must now be abided by, it is still possible to travel and even pursue immigration to Canada from Dubai if you can satisfy the relevant criteria. This article will break down the new regulations for you, so that you can identify whether or not you may be able to fulfill the requirements.

Travelling to Canada During COVID-19

As of December 2021, Canada has stated that fully vaccinated travelers may be selected for arrival testing. This is applicable for individuals who have been in any country other than the United States and Canada 14 days before entry.

Due to the Omicron variant, foreign nationals from Botswana, Egypt, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe will not be allowed entry. You cannot enter Canada if you have visited any of these countries 14 days before entry. You should also keep in mind that this particular list can be edited at any given point without prior warning.

Furthermore, There are guidelines to follow when travelling within Canada. For instance, domestic flights and VIA rail trains in Canada can only be boarded for travel if you are fully vaccinated. This does not apply for children under the age of 12 years and 4 months. The requirements also vary depending on which province you are travelling to, so make sure to read through the guidelines for the relevant province thoroughly, before you plan your visit.

Who is eligible to travel to Canada?

In order to determine your eligibility, you must first figure out which category you fall under.

Fully Vaccinated Travelers

There are an array of factors that are taken into account when determining whether or not you qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller. These include details like whether the type of vaccine you were administered is accepted by the Canadian government, and whether you portray any symptoms. More information can be found on the Government of Canada website. If you do not qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller, you will have to undergo a quarantine plan lasting 14 days, if you are allowed to enter Canada.

Children or dependents

If you qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller, but your children are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated, there are strict guidelines that your children must follow. They must complete pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 tests. A detailed outline of all the rules and regulations can be found here. Keep in mind that these regulations apply to unvaccinated adult dependents over the age of 18 as well.

Unvaccinated Travelers

If you do not qualify as fully vaccinated, you may still be able to visit Canada if you meet certain requirements. If you are over the age of 12 and unvaccinated, you will not be required to quarantine after entering Canada, given that you have a medical reason as to why you cannot receive the vaccine and can comply with the public health measures provided at the border.

You can use the web tool offered by the Canadian government website to help you assess your eligibility. Keep in mind however that this tool does not guarantee entry. The final say on the matter is given by the border officer.
